What the reserve does after dark

The Addo Wildlife Private Game Reserve sits close by, and this two-hour drive is a chance to look for the African lion under cover of darkness. It is a completely different experience to finding one at midday.

The drive also focuses on giraffe and their night-time behaviour, which is not something most visitors ever get to watch. Alongside them, the reserve after dark is busy with wildlife that simply is not visible during daylight hours.

Guides lead the way with spotlights. It is short, it is unlike anything else on this list, and it is the drive guests most often describe as the surprise of their trip.

How the drive runs

Departure follows sunset, so it moves through the year. Your guide confirms the time when you book.

What you might see

The drive is built around lion after dark and giraffe night-time behaviour, alongside the nocturnal species that only come out once the sun has gone. Night sightings are less predictable than daytime ones, and that is part of the appeal.

Common questions

Why not in the national park?
This trip visits Addo Wildlife Private Game Reserve. SANParks also offers its own guided night drives, which are booked separately.
Is dinner included?
Meal inclusions depend on the package booked. Please check your booking or ask us before making dinner plans.
Is it worth doing as well as a day drive?
Yes. The atmosphere and animal activity can be different after dark, although some species may be seen on both drives.
